What To Expect

Starting speech pathology can feel like a big step, but you don’t need to have everything figured out before you get in touch. We’re here to make the process simple and collaborative for both you and your child.

1

Getting in touch

The first step is simply reaching out to our clinic. You can contact us by phone, email or through our referral form

You may be referred to a speech pathologist by your GP, paediatrician, teacher, educator or another health professional, or you can contact us directly.

We’ll have a chat with you about what you’ve noticed, what your child enjoys, what they are currently finding tricky, and what you would like support with.

2

The First Appointment

There is no expectation for your child to “perform” perfectly in their first session. Building trust is an important part of the process.

Depending on your child and the reason for attending, the first appointment may include play-based activities, conversation, observation or informal assessment.

Sometimes we may recommend a more formal assessment. We’ll always explain what we’re doing and why.

3

Therapy Sessions

Speech pathology doesn’t always look like sitting at a table completing worksheets!

For children, therapy is often playful, engaging and built around their interests. Sessions may include games, books, pretend play, movement, crafts, toys, conversation or everyday activities.

We’ll adjust activities to suit your child’s age, interests, communication style and energy on the day.

Parents and caregivers play an important role in therapy.

Where appropriate, we’ll share strategies, ideas and activities that can be naturally incorporated into everyday routines, because communication development doesn’t only happen in the therapy room.

We want you to feel confident knowing what we’re working on, why we’re working on it, and how you can support your child at home.
